911 Lifeline legislation, also known as Medical Amnesty or 911 Good Samaritan laws, protects people who call for help in an alcohol or drug-related emergency. These laws offer limited immunity to people who seek help for themselves or others in need of immediate medical attention. The laws are intended to encourage people to call for help, even if they are underage or have been drinking, by reducing the fear of arrest and prosecution.
In New Jersey, the 911 Lifeline Legislation protects minors who are suspected of alcohol poisoning and need medical assistance.
The law provides immunity from prosecution if the underage person:
Provides their name to the 911 operator
Cooperates with medical assistance and law enforcement
Remains on the scene with the person in need of medical assistance
